Ever since we shifted to a digital-only Wash Post subscription, I've been buying only Wednesday's hard-copy for the Food section and your review of wines. I, then, almost religiously (ask the wine salesmen at Rodman's) go out and purchase the wines you've recommended. Imagine my astonishment to find no Dave McIntyre column in yesterday's hard-copy! I will miss those greatly. I depended on those! I enjoyed reading your column very much. Perhaps more importantly, I enjoyed your taste in wine. Will you be recommending wines in WineLine? Any chance of also letting us know where your recommended wines can be purchased? Probably a lot more work, but I found that very, very helpful. Thank you and good luck in your next career!
Thank you, Caroline, for the very kind words. I do plan to recommend wines here from time to time, exceptional ones that strike a chord with me and are worth seeking out. I don't plan on listing stores for the same reason we stopped doing so in The Post -- the information is difficult to attain, often inaccurate, and not useful to readers who aren't in the area. You say the store lists were helpful to you, but I got so many complaints from retailers, restaurants and readers that it just was not worth doing anymore.
I understand. When they saw me with my column clips searching for your recommended wines, occasionally retailers would complain to me that 'the Post got it wrong'. I didn't care; your lists of retailers gave me at least something to go on and, more often than not, for me your list was right. But, I'm only one person and I can only imagine how much work it must have been compiling those lists of retailers. I'm not suggesting you get back to it! I just wanted you to know that there's at least one of us out here who appreciated all that work.
Good luck. I've enjoyed your work in the past. Used it to inspire some of my work. I also write about wine for newspapers—Gannett/USA Today. Now in my 17th year, and am experiencing the chaos in print. I have been online for most of those years, too. Substack is user friendly, but I've managed my WordPress site for all those 17 years, too. Gus Clemens on Line (Google or Perplexity it for more info).
Welcome to the'Stack! Now into my 3rd year on it, I am enjoying the two way street it provides writers and readers. Look forward to reading more of your stuff, though as I subscribe (on-line) to the WashPost, I enjoyed your work there, too. Haven't seen you for awhile, though I get back often to DC (coming end of this month, even) for Gov Cup Judging in VA, as well as seeing a bunch of family in the area. Check out my latest piece on the WineKnowLog further to my multi-part series on Virginia wines. Joel
Writing about what you're inspired by and passionate about and having a direct relationship with your audience with no gatekeepers is the best approach if you can make it work (financially). I look forward to following along on your journey into the creator economy. Come visit and write about Washington State wines when you have some time.
Thanks, Kevin! I would love to visit Washington state again. Some of my fondest early wine explorations were in Woodinville, Yakima Valley and Walla Walla, and I know the region has changed dramatically since I've been out there. And for some strange reason, Washington state wines don't seem to be properly represented here in Washington DC and environs.
I never realized (or remembered) that you'd been on Robin Garr's page back when. He was a major supporter for us when we started the MoCool wine event here in Michigan. Would love to have you visit our neck of the woods one of these days. You already know we make some pretty fine wines here...
Yes - it has unfortunately been a decade since I was able to visit Traverse City and the peninsulas. So much fun! Now that I'm (doubly) retired, a return visit might be possible!
Great! DuCard is on my list of wineries I need to visit. Scott Elliff has been gracious enough to invite me to some of his events, but I haven't been able to get out there.

Fantastic! If you’re judging the final round, I’ll see you there!

Along with you for the ride, and the drinks, wherever they lead 🥂

I am interested in Mid-Atlantic wines due to having a friend at DuCard and look forward to seeing what you have to say.

Have enjoyed reading your column in the Post for years, and excited to see where you go with this new endeavor.
Thanks for coming along!
Sorry to see you leave WAPO. But lots of stuff seems to be happening there.
When you're out exploring the mid-Atlantic, I'd love to join you if you're visiting a New Jersey winery. Yep, just inviting myself along.
That would be fun!
Keep writing we'll keep reading and sharing!
